Buyers moving toward sustainable materials usually want a straight answer to one question: does the eco-friendly option perform as well as what we use now? For webbing, the honest answer is yes in most cases, with some tradeoffs worth knowing before you commit.
The two most requested sustainable options in our production are recycled PET (rPET) webbing and hemp canvas, and each fits a different product and price positioning.
Recycled PET webbing vs. standard nylon
rPET webbing is made from recycled plastic bottles and can be woven to a similar denier and tensile strength as virgin nylon webbing. At matching weave and denier, rPET webbing generally tests close to nylon for break strength, though color range can be slightly more limited depending on the recycled feedstock available. For the widths you plan to order, a comparative pull test can be arranged on samples if needed.
rPET tensile strength standards
Tensile strength for rPET webbing is tested the same way as standard webbing - pull-to-break testing at a given width and weave. If you need comparative break-strength data for rPET versus standard nylon at the same width, we can discuss arranging a third-party test on samples.
Hemp canvas for a natural product line
Hemp canvas suits a different aesthetic - more rustic, natural-fiber positioning rather than a direct nylon replacement. It is durable but behaves differently under load and moisture than synthetic webbing, so it fits certain product lines better than others.
Where sustainable materials add cost
rPET webbing can carry a modest cost premium over standard nylon depending on supply and colorway, while hemp canvas pricing depends on weight and finish. Neither typically requires a redesign of hardware or construction, which keeps the switch relatively straightforward.
Questions to ask before switching to sustainable materials
- Ask for tensile strength comparison data between rPET and your current nylon webbing.
- Check available colorways, since recycled feedstock can limit certain shades.
- Confirm whether hardware and stitching need adjustment for the new material.
- Get a cost comparison per unit at your target order volume before committing.
