Supplier websites tend to blur together, so the decision usually comes down to two things a catalog cannot show: can this factory actually build your product to spec, and will it still be responsive on your third reorder?
With collars, harnesses, and leashes the risk sits in the details - webbing width, reinforcement points, buckle selection, size grading, label position, and carton packing. Those are the details that influence returns, reviews, and repeat orders.
Start with product focus, not catalog size
A supplier listing hundreds of unrelated items is usually reselling most of them. A focused factory can go straight into construction: webbing type, stitch pattern, hardware grade, size grading. Ask directly which categories are the supplier's core production - for us that is dog and cat collars, dog harnesses, pet leashes, and matching sets.
Ask what drives MOQ, not just the number
MOQ shifts with style, material, colorway, print method, hardware, label, and packaging. A supplier who explains the drivers is telling you how to lower your own minimum. A supplier who quotes one flat number for every project probably has not looked at your design.
Treat the sample as the real interview
A sample shows you hand feel, color accuracy against your reference, stitch quality, hardware action, logo placement, and packaging fit. It also shows how well the factory reads a brief, which matters more over time than the sample itself.
Test communication before you commit
On export orders, communication is part of the product. Send one specific technical question early and see what comes back. A good team will read reference photos and tech packs, flag what is unclear, and ask about your target market before quoting.
Five questions worth asking before you choose
- Is this category made in your own workshop, or placed with another factory?
- What specifically would raise or lower the MOQ on my design?
- How does your sampling process work, and what can I change after the first sample?
- Which packaging and labeling formats have you produced before?
- Which company or quality documents can you share privately once we are in discussion?
